The buyer also collects yachts and enjoyed the look of the ‘20s and ‘30s Rolls-Royce models, so the Sweptail is inspired by that time period, and its sunroof tapers down sharply in the back, thus giving it a look similar to racing yachts.
The Rolls-Royce Sweptail was dethroned as the world’s most expensive car only in 2019, by the La Voiture Noire, which translates to “the black car”. It was unveiled in March 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show as a tribute to the manufacturer’s Type 57 SC Atlantic from the 1930s.
There will only be one made of the La Voiture Noire, and it is the one that was exhibited. Bugatti disclosed that the car was already purchased by an anonymous male buyer, before it was even manufactured. Rumor has it that the proud owner is Ferdinand Piech, former chairman of Volkswagen Group, the company behind Bugatti, but this is not confirmed.
